Yesterday, while shopping in the nearby town of Oxford, MS, I went in the Marimekko boutique there. I had read a little about the brand, but I wanted to learn more, so I checked out their website www.marimekko.com. The Finnish corporation was established in 1951 and designs fabrics, clothing, and other lifestyle products. Many of the prints today are taken from past designs. On the website, you can look at each designer’s fabrics and learn about the actual designer. The fabrics are printed at Marimekko’s own factory on cotton and linens. Marimekko supports young designers as well as experienced designers. One of my favorites, Maija Isola, designed over 500 fabrics from 1950 thru 1987. About fifty of these original designs are included in Marimekko’s current collection, including the pink and black 1957 pattern Ruusupuu, pictured above. The store in Oxford was selling remnants, so I bought a small piece to liven up a quilt.
